Obviously, in view of recent events, the Jaxx DJ dates for Hacienda in Japan scheduled for March 18th & 19th were cancelled.
Basement Jaxx send all their love & sympathy to the people of Japan at this difficult time.
We've made a lot of friends and had so many good times in the country over the years, it's really devastating to watch what is happening over there right now.
Obviously we were disappointed not to come this time but we're looking forward to re-scheduling the Hacienda dates and bringing some Jaxx love & music when the time is right.

The tragic events in Japan were beyond comprehension to myself and many over here in the States.
We have all been shocked and heartbroken to watch what has unfolded in the aftermath of the disaster. It would be impossible to truly express the feeling of sorrow in this message, but please know that many here are thinking of you as you go through this difficult time.
It especially hits home for me, since I have spent much time in Japan over the years. It's a special place that has given me so much. All those affected by these events, especially our friends in the Sendai area, where we've had many good times over the years, we hope to see you come through all this soon. It breaks my heart to see those affected by the Tohoku earthquake. Please don't give up, I sincerely hope that we will help each other out with all our flesh and blood to restore and rebuild. And I truly believe in it. I believe everyone in the country and the whole world will help each other. I will never forget about those of you who have suffered. Please stay strong.

Japan is a seismic country. And an earthquake is the earth's condition. This accident at the power plant was expected in Japan as a seismic country. With the earthquake as the trigger, our lives have been put in danger of radiation. What should we do now? We shouldn't stop creating art, we should stop using power plants. If we don't realize this and act on it now, Japan might come to an end. What I hope for the people of Japan and the rest of the world to do, is to take action to stop the power plants in Japan. Japan has power plants with a tremendous amount of plutonium on top of seismic plates, such as the Monju Reactor in Fukui. The Tokai earthquake is estimated to happen soon, and there is the Hamaoka Power Plant. There are tens of power plants in this seismic country. Earthquakes are a natural disaster, but power plants are human disasters.
And people should make more of an effort to save power. We have been using too much electricity. In order to live a normal life, ground power, fire power, solar power, hydraulic power and wind power should be enough. Humans should live with the blessings of nature. It's all very simple if we live with the natural elements earth has. I sincerely hope that this will make people realize the damage we have caused to nature in the past, and get back on track to living life the way people fundamentally should.

東北大地震で被災された方、本当に心が苦しいです。どうかあきらめないで、人間同士血の通った本当の意味での助け合いをし、復興していくことを願います。そして、そう信じています。きっと、全国民、全人類が総力をあげて、助け合っていけるとおもいます。被災された方の事は一時も忘れません。がんばってください。

日本は地震の国です。そして地震は地球の事情です。そして今回の原発事故は地震の国・日本では想定内の事です。その地震が引き金で、放射能に命をさらされてる私たち人間は今後どうしたらよいのだろう。今私達はアートを止めるのではなく、原発を止めるべきです。今回のことで気づき、実践しないと、もう日本は終わってしまうかもしれません。日本はもちろん、世界中の方に願うのは、今すぐ日本の原発をストップさせる行動を起こして欲しいという事です。日本は福井原発のもんじゅなどものすごいプルトニウムの量の原発が地震プレートの上に立ってます。東海地震は充分予測されてます。浜岡原発もあります。地震の国に何十基もの原発があります。地震は天災だけど、原発は人災です。
そしてもっと人間は本来の節電を心がけるべきです。私達は電気を使い過ぎてきたのではないでしょうか。普通に生活するには、地熱、火力、太陽熱、水力、風力、などで充分まかなえます。　人間は自然の恩恵のみで生きて行くべきです。本来、もともと地球に備わってる自然と共存していれば、簡単な事です。今回のことが、自然を破壊し続けた人間の行方を暗示してることに気づき、人間が本来生きるべき世界に生きれるよう軌道修正していくきっかけになるべきだと願っています。

The recent tragedies in Japan have been felt in peoples hearts all over the world. Here at our home in Canada, everyone we know is deeply concerned about the safety and welfare of the Japanese people. We ourselves in particular who have felt so welcomed and loved in your country are especially moved by the devastation we see in the news and hear about from our Japanese friends. In all the times we've been to Japan we have met nothing but kind, generous, imaginative, passionate people. It breaks our hearts to see such an amazing and special country suffer through so difficult a time. We genuinely hope that all concerns about nuclear safety are identified quickly and clearly, and then resolved without anyone being harmed now or in the future. We also hope that the displaced families and grieving loved ones are able to find the courage to move forward, find peace and return to life with that same sense of exuberance and joy that we have seen so much of in the past.

They always said it was going to come, and I was somewhat prepared for it, but as this tragedy unfolded in reality, the only thing I could do was sit in the middle of my room and pray. As the aftershocks continued and we were full of worry, I felt like people were so powerless in the course of mother nature. But I was surprised and very moved by the warm words and prayers sent from people all over the world. The power of friendship and love is so strong. People are truly amazing.

Fortunately there was not much damage in Tokyo, and we are somewhat back to daily life.
But for the people, including my friends, in the Tohoku area, the damage was severe and they still face difficult cirmumstances.
People who have lost their homes, their work and fields taken away by the tsunami, people still searching for their family. Even in this time of sorrow, the people of Tohoku are caring for each other, and staying strong to live each day.

Please lend us your strength. Hope for the people in suffering to be able to live without anymore worry.
I believe that with everybody's strength together as one, we will be able to overcome anything.

いつかは来ると言われていたし、いざという時のための心の準備はできていたはずだけど、その「いざという時」は部屋の真ん中でじっとしてただ祈るしかなかった。
続く余震と不安の中、自然界の強大な力に対し人間はこんなに小さいのだと思い知らされた気がした。
でも、日々たくさん寄せられる世界中の人たちからの暖かい励ましと祈りの言葉に、ある意味驚き、同時に大感動した。
友情と愛の絆はこんなに強い。人間ってやっぱりすごいんだと思った。

東京は幸い大きな被害もなく、徐々に生活も戻ってきています。
しかしながら、被害のひどかった東北の地域では、私の友人も含めていまだに非常に厳しい状況におかれています。
ー家がなくなってしまった人、仕事場や田畑が流されてなくなってしまった人、行方不明の家族が見つからない人。
深い悲しみの中でも東北の人達はお互いを思いやって日々生きるために頑張ってます。

みなさんの力を貸してください。少しでも早く被災地の人たちが不安のない毎日を取り戻せるよう。
みんなの力を合わせればどんなことでも乗り越えられる大きな力になると信じてます。

Its been almost a month since the disaster and I call on all people.

What Japan needs now is not charity or donations. It is the actions of many.
How many people are in the self defense force? How many people are in the many organizations?
Many of the areas struck by the disaster are still in need of food. People! This is different from the disasters in the past. I call on people to act instead of sending money!
At your company, at your school, in the cities and towns you live in. We all need to act!
And to all of those involved with nuclear power in Japan; the self defense force and fire department are not the ones who can stop the reactor at Fukushima.

And those of us who've worked against nuclear power in the past will support you.
Both those in favor of and against nuclear power have spoken about doing it for "future generations". Now is the time to save Fukushima.
I send deep gratitude to the self defense force personnel, firemen, and the staff working right now at the Fukushima plant and their families. All I can do is deliver supplies to Fukushima but please somehow stay strong!

We are all counting on you. There is not enough people or supplies for the many many places effected by this disaster.
We must act! We must all act one day and the bonds born then will become irreplaceable to us.

Rather then gathering donations around town, go there. I am there too.

「今日本に必要なのは寄付や義援金ではありません。多くの人のアクションです。
日本の自衛隊がどれほどの人数いましょうか？様々な団体の人がどれほどいましょうか？
多くの被災地では未だ食べ物にこまっています。みなさん！いままでの震災とは違います。どうかみなさんお金よりもアクションを！
自分の働いている会社で、自分の通っている学校で、自分の暮らしている市町村で。それぞれでアクションを！
そして日本のすべての原発関連で働いているスタッフの皆さん。福島の原発を止められるのは自衛隊や消防隊ではありません。
今すぐにそれぞれの原発や、再処理工場、また建設予定地での作業を安全に停止して、福島に向って下さい。
みなさんが交代制で活動してもらうことが一番必要です。
そしてその活動をこれまで原発反対運動してきた自分達はサポートをします。
原発推進派も反対派もお互いが"未来の子供たちのために"と言ってきました。今こそみんなで福島を救いましょう。

When the Tohoku Earthquake struck, it was late at night here. I was awake with insomnia and so learned of the devastation in Japan while most Americans were still asleep. Right away I thought of all my Japanese friends and their families, the unimaginable pain of losing those closest to you, and how often it seems we are powerless against the cruel force of nature.

In the days after that shocking news, though, a very different story was taking place there. Again and again, we watched incredible feats of cooperation, self‐sacrifice and sheer resolve in the most overwhelming and terrifying conditions. This has been an ongoing testament to the dignity and spirit of the Japanese people, and a reminder that terrible adversity often reveals the noblest traits in human beings.

I'm deeply saddened for those who have lost their homes, their friends, their families. The world mourns with you. But know also that we watch with awe and admiration as you rebuild Japan with undeniable courage, honor, and determination.

東北大震災が起きた時、こちらは深夜でした。不眠症なので、ほとんどのアメリカ人が寝ている中、この災害のことを知りました。すぐに日本の友達とその家族や、愛する人を失うことの想像もできない苦しみ、そして自然の脅威に対していかに人間が無力であるかということを想いました。

Japan has always been one of our favorite countries to play and it's people are some of the kindest and heartfelt we've ever had the pleasure of meeting. The year before last, I was hit from behind while on the Shuto Highway and damaged my brain.

Apparently, brain cells once damaged do not return to normal.
I am told it will take a long time for other cells to cover the damaged area.

I had finally gotten to the stage where I was able to stand in front of an audience and play a show when this major earthquake hit.
I was painfully reminded of my powerlessness while watching the people effected by the disaster and also those who are facing a life or death mission on television.

But after thinking about it, I came to the realization that there must be something that only I can do to help.

Which is as long as you are alive, as long as you haven't given up hope - there will come a day where we will laugh together again and I vow to really prove this through my rehabilitation and spend the rest of my life doing so. And to deliver happiness and courage and energy to as many people as possible.

While I think the unstable situation will continue for a little while, don't give up and lets stand firm together.

僕は一昨年首都高速で停車中に後方から車に追突され、脳を損傷してしまいました。

脳細胞は一度破壊されると二度と元に戻る事は無いらしく、損傷部を他の細胞がカバーするまでにはまだ暫く時間がかかるようです。

リハビリに専念し、やっと人前でライブができると思い出した矢先、今回の大震災が起りました。
被災し、悲しんでいる人達、そしてまさに命がけのミッションをこなしてくれている人達をテレビで目の当たりにした時、何の手助けもできる状況に無い自分の無力さを痛感しました。

しかし考えていくうちに「僕にしかできない事がある」という思いに辿り着きました。

それは生きてさえいれば、そして希望さえ捨てさえしなければ、必ずまた一緒に笑える日が来ると言う事を今後僕の復帰していく姿を通して、人生を掛けてリアルに証明していきたいと言う事です。
そして、沢山の人に勇気と元気、なによりもハッピーを送り届けたいです。

不安定な状況が暫く続くかと思いますが、諦めずに一緒に頑張りましょう。

We know how it is in our blood when chaos whatever it's result from natural disaster or human stupidity is falling on innocent people. We use too it in Congo everyday. Of course we don't experienced with nuclear problem but we all remember our visit to Hiroshima museum during the great tour we had few years ago with you and we hope nothing like that will happen to you again.
We wish to be closer to Japan in order to come to visit you , to play music for you and to make you happy. Fortunately will come to Fuji-Rock end of July and we'll be glad to share with you these too short days all together.

The thought that those we met in Tohoku while on our national tour last year pains me deeply. I am sure life will not be easy for you. 昨年、一ヶ月全国をツアーで回った時の東北地方で会えた皆様方が、今大変な状況である事がとても心苦しいです。これからの生活等も大変だと思います。
震災当日、僕自身も混乱していた時、仲間やたくさんの人たちの行動がとても気持ち的に助けてくれたのを覚えています。日本は優しくて、互いに思いやる事ができ、たくましい国だと改めて感じました。それがなくならない限り日本は絶対につぶれません。日本を中心として全世界に何か響く音を届ける為に、LITE一同これからも一生懸命活動して行きたいと思います。

It's very difficult to me to put in words what I feel about Japan in these days of tragedy and pain. My heart is suffering.
"Kokoro o Komete" I am in love with Japan since the first time I went there. This love is always growing... After that I returned several times, always bringing memories of culture, kindness and generosity. Japan is since then in my everyday life, in my home, in my heart-Kokoro Monogatari.

I remember that in one of my trips, in a a public garden there was a group of people asking the visitors to write in a piece of paper , what we thought about the atomic bomb. They explained to me that they will keep in closed boxes those letters, and those boxes will be opened a hundred years after. So Japanese, this idea of Time...
And now, what is going to happen?...nobody thought that a nuclear tragedy will be so near.

I did some concerts for Kobe and now I want to organize a big concert in Lisbon , with several artists to help the Japanese people in these moments. I began working on that I feel like taking a plane and go there to be with them...I would like to do this, just to be present.
They are in our History and Portugal is in their History too. I never felt such a respect for my country as I felt in Japan.
I went 14 times to Japan, I decided to pass the 2000 year in Tokyo, with Japanese friends... an important part of what I am is in relation with this country that is suffering so much..

I must help.

Please, please, be as strong as you can..... A lot of persons all around the world are in spirit with you, admiring your dignity, your resilience....and beauty!
Even if I am not a religious person, since the tsunami I pray for Japan every day to Benten San..

神戸の震災時も何度か慈善コンサートをしました。そして今、またここリスボンで、数組のアーティストらと共に大規模なコンサートを開催し日本の人々の力になりたいと、それに向かって動き初めました。あなた方は私たちの歴史の中にあり、またポルトガルも日本の歴史の中にあります。 私は日本で感じた敬意をこれまで自国に対して決して感じる事はありませんでした。これまでに１４回も日本へ旅し、２０００年のカウントダウンの時も東京で日本の友人達と共に過ごしました。それほどまでに私にとって日本は重要な国なので非常に心を痛めています。

All of us in Mogwai are thinking of all our friends and fans in Japan at this terrible time.

We have formed a bond with Japan over the years and the earthquake and the aftermath of the tsunami shocked us greatly. We realise that with so many people having lost there lives and so many more having lost loved ones there isn't a great deal we can do to help but we are willing to help in whatever way we can and with this in mind we are going to be collecting money via a concert we are playing in London this July to raise money to help the relief effort.

We are looking forward to returning to Japan to play Fuji Rock in July and seeing all of our japanese friends and fans in person.

Dear friends in Japan,
I am asking myself how I begin writing this message to you? What can I say ? What would be my first words? well...I fell in Love with Japan many years ago when I first toured there in 1989.I have met many wonderful people in japan and been introduced to so much great music that it has defined me as a musician.I met my wife there and in all the times i have visited Japan I find a peace of mind that seems to elude me back here in the UK,it is truly an inspiring country.

My second Home.

I was very saddened at the images we witnessed on TV of the earthquake and the Tsunami,and the sheer Devastation they caused.It seemed unbelievable and surreal that nature could orchestrate such destruction,me and my wife could not believe our eyes,the images of Tokyo so familiar to us shaking so violently were heart wrenching but more so the images from the Touhoku region which brought tears to my eyes.For a time we could not communicate with our family and friends over there as the lines were so busy that we feared the worst also.

Your country has gone through so many traumatic experiences over the course of History,that I Know in time you will overcome this terrible tragedy

I wish peace for the thousands of people who have passed away and peace for their family's,and for your spirit's to remain strong in these times.

I Hope to return to my second home very,very soon

地震と津波、そしてその影響をテレビで見て、とても深い悲しみを感じました。自然がこのような破壊を起こしたことが信じられなかったし、あまりに非現実的で、妻とともにテレビを見ては我が目を疑い、慣れ親しんだ東京の街並が激しく震えている映像に心痛め、さらに東北の状況を見た時は、目が涙でいっぱいになりました。一時は混線状態で日本にいる家族や友人と連絡を取ることができず、最悪の事態を恐れました。

日本は過去の歴史において、多くの危機的状況を乗り越えてきました、だから時とともに、この悲劇も乗り越えられると信じています。

命を落とされた何千人もの人々のご冥福をお祈りし、そのご家族に平安が訪れること、そしてこの苦しい時に強く、逞しいスピリットが皆さんとともにあることを願っています。

To my friends in Japan

I spent much of this past winter in Tokyo and Nagano, enjoying Japan's food, culture and New Year's celebrations. I immediately felt welcome, despite my terrible grasp of Japanese. I made new friends with people at my label and Smash booking, met new bands, reconnected with old friends. I sent home boxes of soba noodles, ume plums and shochu.

Like most people in Canada, we are all watching the news reports of the recent tragedies with great emotion. I have made donations to Médicins Sans Frontières on behalf of the affected, and have urged others to do the same. I will be auctioning a violin for this same cause.

I wish all of you strength and perseverance and I will be back as soon as I can, miss you all, love, Owen

The word empathy, by definition, is "the ability to understand and share the feels of another." I thought I knew and understood the meaning of the word but nothing could have prepared me for the shock I received when I first learned of the tragedy that recently devastated Japan. The country of Japan is one of my favorite places in the entire world and the idea of such a horrible disaster ravaging such a pure and beautiful place is almost too painful to bear. My heart is truly with those who are suffering and I am constantly on my knees praying for fast recovery.

But more than anything, I pray that such terrible misfortune will ultimately bring people closer together, and through the mighty strength of compassion, support and kindness, unite the Japanese nation in a new way. If such be God's will, may this happen swiftly.

THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART

Dear People of Japan,

Perhaps the single most wonderful and magical experience our band has ever had was our 10 day tour of Japan in February 2010. The many incredible people we met, the diverse and beautiful places we saw and, yes, the amazing snacks we tasted were unlike any other travel experience we've ever had. There is no other place on earth so equally strange and wonderful to us, and the acceptance and love we received for our music was so incredibly life-affirming.   So it saddens us greatly to see the physical and emotional devastation that you have endured in the wake of the recent earthquake, tsunami and ongoing nuclear disaster at Fukushima. The scale of this tragedy is so far beyond anything we can even grasp - and while news reports can only offer an incomplete view into the ongoing suffering of so many people, even that glimpse is far more terrifying than anything we've seen in our lifetimes.   While we are only a band, and music is far less important than food, water and shelter for the thousands affected by this tragedy, we want you to know we are still 100 percent committed to coming to the Fuji Rock Festival this summer and that our hearts and our prayers are with you in this tumultuous time.

私達がバンドとしてこれまでで最もマジカルで素晴しい体験をしたのは、2010年2月の10日間のジャパン・ツアーだったと思います。素晴しい人々に出会い、様々な美しい場所を訪れ、そう、そして素晴しいお菓子の数々は他のどの国でも体験することの出来ない貴重なものでした。私達にとって、世界中でこれ程までに不思議さと素晴らしさが等しく共存している国はないし、私達の音楽に対してとても寛容で愛に溢れていました。だからこそ、地震と津波、それに伴う福島の原発事故であなた達が精神的にも肉体的にも苦しめられている姿を見るのはとても悲しかったです。この災害のスケールは大きすぎて私達はまだ把握しきれていません。そして、こちらに伝わって来る報道はどれも皆さんの受けている甚大な被害の断片的なものでしかないのですが、それですら、私達がこれまでに知るどの災害よりも恐ろしものだというのを感じています。私達は所詮バンドでしかなく、食料、水、何万もの人々の避難する場所の方が音楽よりも当然重要ですが、私達は今年の夏に行われるフジロックに参加することを100％誓います。私達の心と祈りはこの騒然とした時を迎えている皆さんと共にあります。

Through Fuji Rock, we've experienced how to enjoy music together with millions of people, and how music and the environment can come together as one. From that experience, I've felt and thought alot about one thing. And when we faced this tremendous disaster, I had to face it straight up once again.

I had to face my motivation as to why I play music. To not turn our backs to it.
I feel like this is a very important thing right now.
At the same time, I always think what can we do with music? or what can't we do with music?

Thinking about friends in this horrible situation and imagining what they are going through. Remembering scenes from the past, thinking about the future, and imagining what you can do. I strongly feel that music helps people to thnk about these things.

Imagination is really needed right now.
And I believe that music is there for our prayers.

同時に、被災された更に多くの皆様に、心からお見舞い申し上げます。

Fuji Rock Festival への参加を通じて、僕たちは多くの人たちと時間と空間を共有する、音楽と環境の存在の仕方を経験して来ました。
その中で感じ、考えてきた事が有ります。
それは、今回のような未曾有の大災害に直面した時に、はっきりと向き合わなくてはならない事だったのです。

「どうして音楽をやるのか？」という動機に向き合う事。
この事から目を背けない事。
これが、今必要な事だと思います。
同時に、僕らに、音楽に何が出来るのだろうか？何が出来ないのだろうか？と考え続けています。

少なくとも、とても辛い状況にいる仲間の事を、その仲間の気持ちを想像する事。
過去に在った情景を思い出したり、これから起こりうる事を考えて、何が出来るかを想像する事。
音楽は、そういった事の手助けの力に成り得るんじゃないかと、強く思えて来ました。

想像力が今、必要なんだと思います。
そして、音楽は祈りの為に在ると信じています。

意識と想像力を高めて、一緒に頑張って行きましょう。

I was very disappointed to learn of our postponement. We in The Sonics had hoped we might be able to bring some music and some fun to our fans and the people of Japan during this terrible and very sad time. The Bawdies are a great rock and roll band and we were looking forward very much to meeting the guys and playing some shows with them. Hopefully we can still do that in the future. We are happy to learn that we will be coming to Japan next Fall and we are excited to play for and meet our fans...both old and new. Please come and meet us and say hello after the show. I spent the last weekend with friends. We were on a ski trip in the mountains of Utah. We spent a lot of time watching the news to see how things were going in Japan. The news focused, mainly, on the condition of the nuclear power plant and film clips of the tsunami. It is almost unbelievable to see the power of nature that devastated your country. We have the deepest sympathy for the Japanese people and the losses you have suffered.
My trips to Japan are full of beautiful memories. Playing with the String Cheese Incident at Fuji Rock Festival, Asagiri Jam and traveling on the bullet train across the country playing night after night, Masa Hidaka San and our other friends at Smash took great care of us. They took us out to group dinners and late night parties and we often went out on our own to check out the japanese culture. Such a friendly and inviting country.
The String Cheese Incident mourns your loss. We also look forward to coming back to Japan to play more music and visit our friends once again.

"We feel very sorry for the people of Japan. They have to cope with a chain of reaction of natural catastrophes they did not experience since WW II. This is an extreme situation in many aspects – emotionally, mentally, physically, ecologically, economically etc.

Ever since globalization and the omnipresent mass media the world has become one, there is no separation between continents, countries, nationalities and people anymore, the global net does also exist on the level of emotions – we suffer vicariously with everybody. In this respect this catastrophe concerns everybody and we have to support the Japanese people in many different ways.

Let's support young people from Japan by performing on Fuji Rock! They need hope, a normal life, a perspective and people from all over the world who give them a hand. Arts and music are a wonderful medicine.

"I was talking on skype to my friend Yuriko in Tokyo when the earthquake occured, it was frightening even just watching on a computer screen. The TV news reports and pictures showed how terrible the devastation was. There are no words I can say except than "I love Japan".

"I hope to say these words in person when I come with my band in April to play in Tokyo and Osaka. See you then."

地震の時、私は東京にいる友人のユリコとSkypeを通して話をしていたのですが、コンピューターのスクリーン越しでもその恐怖が伝わりました。テレビのニュース等ではいかに壊滅的な災害だったかを映しています。私には「日本を愛している」という言葉しか出てきません。
4月に私のバンドで東京と大阪に行った際に、直接皆にこの言葉をかける事が出来るように願っています。みんなに会えるその時まで。
